UFC 131

Sabato 11 giugno 2011, live dalla Rogers Arena di Vancouver UFC 131 avrà come protagonisti indiscussi i due più forti puncher dell'Ultimate Fighting Championship! Junior Dos Santos sfiderà Shane Carwin. Una battaglia che decreterà lo sfidante del campione Cain Velasquez per il titolo Heavyweight, una lotta tra chi stenderà con un colpo solo l'avversario. Un incontro simile ad un Mike Tyson vs. George Foreman ma con guanti più leggeri e sottili.
Con un record di 12-1 nella sua carriera nelle mma, Dos Santos ha messo al tappeto con i suoi pugni ben 9 avversari, da Fabricio Werdum a Stefan Struve, Mirko Cro Cop e Roy Nelson.
"Voglio essere il campione, l'unico campione UFC della categoria dei pesi massimi al mondo. Ho una sfida importante davanti a me. E' Shane Carwin, un combattente molto pericoloso che rispetto.Ma credo così tanto in me stesso e nelle mie potenzialità. Darò il massimo per restare in prima linea e battermi per il Titolo", ha affermato Dos Santos.
Contro di lui Carwin, record di 11-1, dotato di un pugno forte come pochi.
"Combattere contro Dos Santos non è proprio piacevole soprattutto se il preavviso è di soli 30 giorni , ma nella vita hai poche occasioni come questa. Quando ho ricevuto la telefonata per me è stato un sì immediato. Entrerò lì dentro e farò quello che mi piace fare. Non c'è alcun dubbio che se io e Junior siamo dove siamo è grazie alla nostra abilità di mettere ko l'avversario. Ed è questo che succederà in UFC 131".
L'evento sarà trasmesso in diretta pay-per-view su Sky Primafila alle 3:00 della notte tra sabato 11 giugno 2011 e domenica 12.

Il saluto di Fedor

Ma siccome, nonostante la sconfitta subita, Fedor conserva e mostra ancora un grande talento, dobbiamo parlare di lui al presente.

span id="fullpost">Più che un atleta infatti, Fedor, è un vero e proprio artista, marziale ovviamente, per la sua straordinaria velocità, tempismo, intelligenza e classe infinita nel disputare e concludere ogni incontro, sfidando ogni tipo di avversari. Una raffinatezza di movenze, una forza esplosiva ed una tecnica che, perfino ai non addetti ai lavori, appaiono come una luce abbagliante rispetto a tutti gli altri atleti.

Un personaggio incredibile; che fisicamente sembra il vicino di casa, ma il cui carisma e la cui grandezza sono cresciuti piano piano, vittoria dopo vittoria, in tutto il mondo. Un campione che, a causa anche del suo carattere tranquillo e riservato, spesso è sembrato apparire come un antipersonaggio.

L’evento americano che ha visto protagonista il campione russo era il quarto di finale del torneo dei pesi massimi Strikeforce, contro il brasiliano Antonio “Piedone” Silva. Un avversario certamente degno di rispetto, ma che fino ad allora non aveva mai fatto impazzire i tifosi per le sue gesta.

Purtroppo però non è andata come quasi tutti si aspettavano, anzi. L’epilogo del match è stato quasi drammatico, poiché alla fine del secondo round l’arbitro ha interrotto il combattimento a causa di una ferita all’occhio destro di Fedor. Il quale, intervistato poco dopo all’interno della gabbia esagonale, ha dichiarato che forse è arrivato il momento di abbandonare le competizioni. Con grande rammarico da parte di tutti i suoi sostenitori.

In effetti, a 34 anni, il campione Fedor ha combattuto molte battaglie, che talvolta lo hanno segnato fisicamente e che di sicuro gli hanno assorbito moltissime energie anche sul piano mentale. Oggi probabilmente, come è naturale che avvenga, anche gli stimoli sono in calo, per uno come lui che ha vinto tutto. Con una metafora calcistica, lo hanno paragonato al Maradona delle mma e probabilmente è proprio così.

Ecco quindi che un atleta così apprezzato e benvoluto da tutti i tifosi non può e non deve scomparire dal mondo delle mma, nonostante la possibile fine di carriera. Quello di Fedor non deve essere un addio, ma un saluto di arrivederci alla prossima. Almeno ce lo auguriamo.

Perché il suo cuore è stato ed è tuttora enorme e perché tutti noi lo vogliamo rivedere al più presto sorridente ed in piena forma.

[UFC 115]: “Liddell vs. Franklin” - 10 fights ufficializzati (12/06/2010)

Patrick Barry will collide with 2006 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic in a featured heavyweight bout at UFC 115 “Liddell vs. Franklin” on June 12 at the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Ten fights are now official for the event.

Once a dominant force in the heavyweight division, Filipovic has faded in recent years but still remains a formidable foe. The 35-year-old Croatian has posted three wins in four fights, including a one-sided second-round technical knockout against Anthony Perosh at UFC 110 in Australia two months ago. Twenty of Filipovic’s 26 career victories have come by knockout or TKO. His list of victims includes former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett, UFC hall of famer Mark Coleman, 1992 Olympic gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida and Brazilian icon Wanderlei Silva.

Barry, a protégé of former world kickboxing champion Duke Roufus, has yet to go the distance as a professional mixed martial artist. The 30-year-old New Orleans native stopped Antoni Hardonk on second-round punches at UFC 104 in October.

A pair of world-ranked welterweights will have the UFC 115 spotlight on them, as once-beaten Brazilian Paulo Thiago locks horns with Martin Kampmann.

Thiago will carry a two-fight winning streak into the match. The 29-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has secured eight of his 13 career wins by submission. Victories over American Kickboxing Academy thoroughbreds Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick have thrust Thiago, a special operations police officer in Brazil, into title contention.

Based at Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas, Kampmann last appeared in January, when he submitted Jacob Volkmann with a second-round guillotine choke at UFC 108. It was his third victory in four fights. The 27-year-old former Cage Warriors middleweight champion has never been submitted in 19 professional bouts.

Meanwhile, former World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight champion Carlos Condit will hit the cage for the first time since September when he faces off with unbeaten Canadian Rory MacDonald.

Condit was scheduled to take on British striker Paul Daley in January, but a freak hand injury nixed the matchup and put his career in jeopardy. The 25-year-old Albuquerque, N.M., native has posted nine wins in 10 fights and holds notable victories over former Icon Sport middleweight champion Frank Trigg, Minnesota Martial Arts Academy veteran Brock Larson and the surging Jake Ellenberger. A potent finisher, 23 of Condit’s 24 career wins have come by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Spawned by the Toshida Martial Arts gym in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, MacDonald has finished all 10 of his opponents as a professional. The 20-year-old former King of the Cage lightweight champion dazzled in his promotional debut three months ago, as he submitted Michael Guymon with a first-round armbar at UFC Fight Night 20 in Fairfax, Va.

UFC 115 will also feature a teammate-versus-teammate lightweight encounter between Xtreme Couture stablemates Tyson Griffin and Evan Dunham.

Griffin, 25, has lost two only two men -- current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and former lightweight titleholder Sean Sherk -- as a professional. The Sacramento, Calif., native has not set foot inside the Octagon since he stopped Hermes Franca on second-round strikes at UFC 103 in September. In 16 career bouts, Griffin has never been finished.

The undefeated Dunham has delivered six of his 10 victories by submission. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, the 28-year-old Eugene, Ore., native submitted “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 winner Efrain Escudero at UFC Fight Night 20 in January.

A lightweight match pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 6 winner Mac Danzig against Matt Wiman and a heavyweight tilt between Ben Rothwell and Gilbert Yvel will anchor the UFC 115 undercard. In addition, the event will host welterweight matchups pairing “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 winner James Wilks with Peter Sobotta, Claude Patrick with Ricardo Funch and Mike Pyle with Jesse Lennox.

[UFC 112]: Invincible - Edgar-Penn Rematch in Works for Late Summer, Fall (10/04/2010)

A rematch of last Saturday’s UFC 112 lightweight championship tilt between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn is looking likely for late summer or fall.

Representatives in both fighters’ camps told Sherdog.com on Tuesday that UFC officials have approached both sides to lock down a second bout between the lightweight fighters. No date or venue has been solidified yet. Edgar earned a unanimous decision over Penn at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., to become the promotion’s lightweight champion.

Edgar’s victory, which delivered Penn his first loss in the 155-pound division since 2002, did not come without controversy. Both the media and fans were split on the bout’s outcome, as the 28-year-old New Jersey fighter was awarded 50-45, 48-47 and 49-46 scores in a tight contest some thought Penn had won.

Edgar told the Sherdog Radio Network’s “It’s Time” show host Bruce Buffer on Tuesday that he’d agree to the rematch.

“If anybody’s earned a rematch, it’s B.J.,” said Edgar. “He’s a legend at 155. I’m ready for it if that’s definitely going to happen. I’m the champion. I don’t get to pick who I fight; they tell me who I fight.”

Edgar, who trains under UFC middleweight Ricardo Almeida and others in the tri-state area, said he’d watched the fight on Monday and had given himself three rounds. Edgar said he felt the first round could have gone to him as well.

“It was definitely was a close fight, but I truly do feel I won,” said Edgar, “There’s going to be people that think one way and people that think the other, but all three judges felt I won.”

Sherdog.com has learned that two dates are being considered for the championship bout -- Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston or Aug. 7, possibly in New Jersey.

“Honestly, I’d like a little bit more time,” Edgar said of an August rematch. “My wife’s due (with a second son) in mid to late June. And again, I want to improve, I want be different every fight. I want to be ready. I know if I get a rematch, B.J.’s going to be coming better than ever, so I want to be able to make sure that I can too, for me and the fans.”

[UFC 113]: Machida vs Shogun 2 - 8 Questions for Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua (08/05/2010)

It was the most bitter of defeats.

Nearly seven months later, 2005 Pride Fighting Championships welterweight grand prix winner Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will get a second crack at light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in the UFC 113 “Machida vs. Shogun 2” main event on May 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The 28-year-old Rua discussed his preparation for the hyped rematch, the controversial decision that resulted from his first encounter with Machida and the fast rise of light heavyweight contender Jon Jones in a recent interview with Sherdog.com.

Sherdog.com: With roughly a month left until your rematch with Lyoto Machida, how has training gone?
Shogun: I’m doing my best. The training is good. I’m very focused, and everything is going alright. I have many good fighters training here -- Glaube Feitosa, my brother, [Joao Paulo] “Tuba” [de Souza], Andre “Dida” [Amado]. We have good people and a solid structure. Everything is great.

Sherdog.com: Glaube Feitosa, one of Brazil's K-1 legends, is training with you. How did you get him into your gym?
Shogun: I have a friend who is a friend of Glaube’s, and one day while I was talking to him, I told him that I had watched his fights and was a fan of the guy. Then, coincidentally, he moved to Curitiba with his family. I had said a month earlier that I thought he was very good in muay Thai, and just after that, he came to live here. He is very humble, a very nice person and it seems like we’ve known each other for years.

Sherdog.com: Like Machida, he’s based in karate, but are their styles the same?
Shogun: No. If you watch Glaube and Machida fight, you will see that they have totally different styles; it’s another game. But guys like Glaube, Tuba and Jaoa Raphael “Simpson” are at a level of technical evolution where they are shaped according to the opponent. Joao Guilherme, too; he came from karate and can shape himself according to the Lyoto’s game. As I said in another interview, I hired seven karatekas for the first fight but only stayed with the Joao Guilherme. The people who train with me who can imitate Lyoto’s game are Tuba, Dida and João Guilherme, and they’re here at the academy. We know Lyoto’s game. We saw many of his fights, and they do exactly what he does.

Sherdog.com: You didn’t like the decision in your first fight with Lyoto. At several subsequent UFCs, controversies arose after what many perceived as judging errors. What do you think about that?
Shogun: That happened in my fight, but I see it as part of the past. I don’t think about it. I just think about doing my work and getting ready in there. I just think on May 8 that I have to come well-prepared, without thinking about whether the judges will favor him or me. Hopefully, if I win this fight and it goes to the judges, the judging will be much better.

Sherdog.com: What do you expect Machida to do differently in this next fight?
Shogun: Lyoto is a very eclectic guy who can change his game, but I’ll be prepared for all situations. Actually, I don’t care what he does, only about what I do. I like to train hard, so I worry about being prepared.

Sherdog.com: Jon Jones, who fights in your division, has impressed a lot of people in recent fights. What do you think of his game?
Shogun: He is a great young fighter, too damn good, and he’s coming with everything in our division. He is very good in wrestling. I think he and Cain Velasquez are the two guys with the best wrestling in MMA today, together with Georges St. Pierre. He’s a very good wrestler, very dangerous. He’s a guy who will give a lot of people trouble.

Sherdog.com: What’s next for your brother, Murilo “Ninja” Rua?
Shogun: Murilo is committed to Shine Fights on May 15. He will fight a week after me, so we’ll all be together. The gym has all its fights in May, so the workouts are good. We have a good crowd, all scheduled for fights. That’s good for everybody. God willing, Murilo will represent our country very well and our academy there in Shine.

Sherdog.com: What can fans expect from you in this next fight?
Shogun: You guys can be sure I’m ready. I’ve given everything in me to the training I do. You can expect that I will give my best to represent my country and my gym and to come back with this belt, which is a big dream. I want to thank the people who root for me. My fans are my greatest motivation.

A seguito riporto i video del deludente evento targato UFC di ieri sera, ci si aspettava tantissimo ma come spesso accade quando ci si aspetta molto, si ottiene poco. Main Event che ha dell'incredible per il comportamento del campione, co-main event terminato con una decisione che sembra assurda, gracie vs hughes che sembra un incontro fra due pensionati... davvero male per l'UFC nella sua prima trasferta nel medio oriente.

Ricordo che, come sempre, di tanto in tanto i video verranno rimossi, ma provvederemo a sostituirlo con alcuni funzionanti. Per ora è disponibile solo il main event, a breve aggiungeremo a questo post altri video.
