[It's Showtime]: Amsterdam Arena - Petrosyan v. Holzken Cancelled? Petrosyan Rumored to be Injured (29/05/2010)
If this turns out to be true, this is very unfortunate news as it will mark the third major fight Petrosyan has dropped out of since his breakthrough performance last year. Already we've been denied the fight with Masato and Sato, and while the Holzken fight would not have been on that same level, it would have been a very exciting contest. Petrosyan is clearly one of, if not the, best fighters in the world, and while he has plenty of time left in his career, it's a let down to see him drop out again. Some are very critical of this news, however I see no reason to fault him here. That said, I do hope he takes the time to heal this injury properly, even if it means sitting out for some time, as that is preferable to these constant changes, or to this becoming an injury that haunts him throughout his career.
This has to be crushing news for Holzken. A hugely popular fighter in Amsterdam, Holzken has turned in very strong performances over the last year, and earned a high profile fight like this. With Petrosyan out, and with the card drawing nearer, it's uncertain who could step in to face The Natural at this point. Perhaps Albert Kraus, though personally I'd rather see Saiyok v. Holzken here.
As for It's Showtime, some are saying this card is facing many hardships, and while that's true, it was inevitable with so many early fight announcements. Still, with local favorite Tyrone Spong out, Holzken's fight up in the air, Souwer out, and a main event that is not what they may have hoped for, there must be some frustration from the It's Showtime camp.
We'll update with any official word that comes in. Leggi tutto...

[It's Showtime]: Budapest risultati (17/04/2010)
Perhaps the biggest story coming out is another win for 77kg champion Cosmo Alexandre, who defeated Csaba Gyorfy via cut in round 1. The cut came after a flying knee - the exact same strike Cosmo used to win the title from Dmitry Shakuta in Milan. Alexandre is on a great roll here as this marks his 8th straight win, including victories over John Wayne Parr, Naruepol, and Tum Madsue, along the way winning an Evolution tournament, the Muay Thai King's Cup, and the It's Showtime title. It's a shame the 77kg division is not very full, as I hope to keep seeing Alexandre against the best in the world.
In other main card results, Anderson Braddock Silva rebounded from his loss to Redzovic by defeating Tihamer Brunner via decision; Bjorn Bregy decisioned Wendell Roche, and Murtel Groenhart TKO'd Daniel Geczi.

11th Fight Added to 63kg Grand Prix
An 11th fight has been added to the opening round of the K-1 63kg GP. Haruaki Otsuki will face Yoshimichi Matsumoto. With this fight added, at least three of the round one winners will not receive invitations to the final 8.
Otsuki was mentioned early on as a possible participant, however Tanigawa said he would not be involved because his style was not a good fit for K-1. Apparently, Otsuki's fans flooded K-1 with calls of support, and Tanigawa caved, allowing Otsuki to get his shot.

[K-1]: Weekend Results: Zambidis, Yod, Leko win in Milan
In one of the biggest fights on the card, K-1 fighter "Iron" Mike Zambidis defeated Warren Stevelmans via decision. Zambidis was last seen on the big stage last October, where he lost a controversial fight to Hinata and was all but written off by the K-1 commentary team. Since then he has bounced back with two straight wins, first over Dzhabar Askerov, and now over Stevelmans. Zambidis scored a knockdown in round 2, though some live reports claim this should have been ruled a slip. Footage is not yet available, so we'll have to wait and see.
Also bouncing back on this show - Yodsaenklai Fairtex, who returned from his shocking upset loss to Vusi Colossa last month by defeating Abdel Halim Issaou. The fight was contested under Muay Thai rules and took place at the 76 kg weight limit. Yod took the fight via a TKO due to cuts in round 3.
Finally, Stefan "Blitz" Leko defeated Moussa Sissoko via TKO. At just 1-5 in his last 6 fights, Leko definitely needed the win here to show that he's not entirely done just yet. Leggi tutto...

[K-1]: Saenchai, Kaoklai win in California event
Saenchai Sor Kingstar vs Tetsuya Yamato
This past weekend saw two of Muay Thai's biggest international stars competin on American soil as Saenchai sor Kingstar and Kaoklai Kaennorsing both took part in a Muay Thai event in El Monte, California. Both Thai fighters emerged victorious, with Kaoklai scoring a 3rd round knockout via elbows over Magnum Sakai, while Saenchai had a spectacular highlight reel KO in round 1 against Tetsuya Yamato. Saenchai's full fight can be seen below.
Also of note, Kaoklai mentioned a desire to move to Los Angeles to work as a trainer, which certainly would be a moost to the US Muay Thai scene.

[K-1 MAX]: West Europe GP risultati - perde l'italiano Saro Presti (21/03/2010)
A Muay Thai fighter, Khamal's last high profile fight was a big win over renowned fighter Anuwat at Slamm 6 in November. At that event he competed at his normal weight of 62 kg. Highly popular, many pegged Khamal as a favorite to win this tournament, despite the size disadvantage of moving up a weight class. On his way to the finals, Khamal defeated Chris van Venrooij and Robin van Roosmalen. In the finals, Khamal faced our early pick to win the tournament, It's Showtime fighter Harut Grigorian, ending Grigorian's night via TKO in round 2.
The show also featured last year's tournament winner Leroy Kaestner in non-tournament action. Kaestner has had some tough loses in the past year against stiff competition, including Andy Souwer, Yasuhiro Kido, and Nieky Holzken. Here, Kaestner was able to get back in the winner's column, defeating Menno Dijkstra via decision.

[K-1]: WGP in Yokohama - Karaev Drops out of Le Banner fight; Spong steps in as replacement (03/04/2010)
While Spong v. Le Banner is not a bad match-up, this still does come as a disappointment. Stylistically, Karaev v. Le Banner was a good pairing, with two heavy hitters, both in a low point in their careers, trying to get some redemption from recent performances. It was intriguing to see where both men stood, particularly Karaev, who has been a very frustrating fighter to follow in recent years.
Once considered one of the next top fighter in K-1, Karaev's last few years have seen extensive lay-offs, and some less than stellar performances. This was capped by his loss to Hesdy Gerges last October, a fighter who has since shown that he is not at that top level of competition just yet. Karaev has a lot of fans, who still look back on his wins over Hari and Leko as proof of his skill, but with the exception of a 2009 victory of Kyotaro, Karaev simply has not demonstrated that he is a top-tier fighter recently. This was a good opportunity to reassert his position, and it is a shame to see him on the shelf yet again.
Spong was rumored to face Singh Jaideep on this card, though that fight was not yet announced. Leggi tutto...

[K-1 MAX]: Petrosyan fuori per infortunio (27/03/2010)
Although K-1 has not yet made the announcement official, It's Showtime is indeed an official representative of Petrosyan, so it looks like this is not simply a rumor.
This is, without a doubt, very unfortunate news. You hate to see any fighter injured, and this in particular was a very compelling and much anticipated fight. For K-1, this has to be very difficult, as Petrosyan has yet to fight for the organization since winning the MAX crown. As a newcomer to the company, they are no doubt looking to build him up to fans, and this was a good opportunity to do just that, while also potentially building up a new Japanese ace to replace Masato. With Masato gone, they also need all the star power they can get, and the loss of the main event is no help in that area.
Some fans are now questioning the prudence of Petrosyan taking two big fights just two weeks apart (against Khem and Sato). Always a busy fighter, Petrosyan has a very full schedule this spring, and with a full schedule, these sort of injuries can indeed happen. Moving forward, while I appreciate his hard work and would love to see him fight again soon, let's hope he takes the time needed to let this injury properly heal, and prevent it from becoming an ongoing issue.
