[DREAM]: Korea Cancelled

NoB is reporting that the April 24 DREAM event in Korea has been cancelled due to not being able to secure a broadcast deal because some star fighters won't be available. This is unfortunate turn of events for FEG/DREAM.

Korean MMA site MFight report that it was announced today that the April 24th DREAM Korea event, which Yoon Dong Sik, Jung Bukyung, etc. have been preparing for, has been cancelled. The reason for the cancel seems to be some star fighters not being available in April (Hong Man Choi and Denis Kang) which in turn led to the DREAM officials not being able to secure a deal for broadcast on Korean TV.

No word on any future date for an event in South Korea for DREAM or if it will even happen.

DREAM.13 is in the books. In the main event, DREAM Featherweight Champion Bibiano Fernandes (8-2) won a 2-1 decision over Joachim Hansen (19-9-1) in a close match that could have went either way.

Josh Barnett (25-5) defeated Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga (3-2) after the match was stopped for over 10 minutes when Barnett caught Mo with a front kick directly to the groin. Eventually the fight continued and shortly thereafter Mo succumbed to a kimura.

Lightweight K.J. Noons (8-2) picked up a win for Strikeforce after defeating Andre "Dida" Amado (6-4-1) by unanimous decision. Ryo Chonan (17-10) got the unanimous decision victory over Andrews Nakahara (2-2) despite Nakahara showing lots of heart in the fight. The "Apache Kid", Cole Escovedo (16-4) connected with a devastating left roundhouse right dropping Yoshiro Maeda (26-8-2) early in the 1st round. Katsunori Kikuno (13-2-2) landed a massive blow dropping the Cage Force champion Kuniyoshi Hironaka (16-7) less then two minutes into the fight. And in the opener, Ikuhisa Minowa (45-30-8) reversed a mount and locked in a toe-hold to defeat Jimmy Ambriz (14-13-1).

[Dream. 13]: 5 reasons to watch Dream. 13 (22/03/2010)

While the casual fan hunkers down in anticipation of this Sunday’s UFC debut on the Versus network, the hardcore cognoscenti are stocking up on Red Bulls in anticipation of a long night of MMA thanks to the quality Dream 13 seems set to deliver Monday morning on HDNet.

Whether you’re champing at the bit for Bibiano Fernandes’ title defense against Norwegian horror movie Joachim Hansen or consider yourself an unashamed fan of the physical comedy that is Ikuhisa Minowa’s fighting style, this is a card anyone can get down with.

InDreaming of Better Days

Pride’s downward spiral and eventual annexation by the UFC left an Akebono-sized void on the other side of the Pacific as Japan was suddenly without a fistic force. Many have failed spectacularly to fill that void. Dream is one of the few with any hope of reviving the kakutougi boom that Pride rode to prominence.

With Zuffa’s death grip on talent tightening faster than California’s budget, time is running out for Dream to establish itself as a legitimate alternative for the ever-growing collection of all-universe fighters up for grabs. Just put aside the quality and consequences of this fight card and think of all the drama Dream has been through since its inception. Financial instability, poor ratings and often nonsensical matchmaking have hounded the organization. Yet the success of Dream’s grand prix tournaments and ongoing alliance with Strikeforce has kept Dream in the hearts and minds of the ever-faithful hardcore audience.

With a quality main event and solid undercard bouts to back it up, this may be one of Dream’s last chances to win over the masses and stake its claim as the rightful heir to Pride’s legacy.

A Tattooed Norwegian Walks Into a Bar

The realness is off the charts for Brazilian mat shark Bibiano Fernandes’ defense of the Dream featherweight strap against Norwegian brain-bomber Joachim Hansen. After years of hearing fans scream in chorus for him to drop down a weight class, Hansen’s timing has proven impeccable: A win over Fernandes would land him a spot among the featherweight elite.

While the bulk of the world’s featherweight talent resides in the WEC, this could be the fight that gets Dream’s featherweight division pointed in the right direction. The bout itself is one of the best matchups to be made in the featherweight class. Fernandes and Hansen are two of the slickest grapplers in the game, and neither man is afraid of putting his brain cells on the line in a striking exchange.

Jose Aldo and Urijah Faber will still be the star attractions of the featherweight class after this weekend, but every MMA fan alive owes it to themselves to watch this fight. An evenly matched bout between top-tier fighters is rare enough. Throw in a style clash that has it tabbed as a pre-emptive Fight of the Year candidate, and there’s no reason why everyone shouldn’t consider switching to Japanese time.

Noons is a ready-made contender.
After a regrettable decision to pursue professional boxing, the razor tag champion of MMA, K.J. Noons, makes his return to the game against Brazilian bomber Andre “Dida” Amado.

Undoubtedly best known for his merciless shredding of Nick Diaz’s visage in ElteXC, Noons lost an awful lot of hype after walking away from the sport so abruptly. He is still a ready-made contender, though, and given the flexibility in his contract, he could become a force in both the Strikeforce and Dream lightweight divisions.

Just how much that nearly two-year layoff has affected his game is the question on everyone’s mind. Amado is hardly a free “W” considering his wins over quality fighters like Caol Uno and Hiroyuki Takaya. Although Amado is hardly some Noons’ equal as a technical striker, he’s proven in both defeat and victory that he’s as game as it gets.

Considering Noons doesn’t have an excess of kill-shot power, this is going to be a far more competitive fight than most fans give it credit for. Any time two reasonably sound strikers mix it up, it’s must-see MMA and this is one of those fights that more people need to be hyped up about.

The Brief, Wondrous Fistic Life of Josh Barnett

You’d be hard-pressed trying to sum up the career of Josh Barnett with anything less than a full-blown thesis-length document. Undoubtedly one of the best heavyweight prospects anyone has ever seen, his career has involved everything from title reigns to failed drug tests.

The ongoing drama surrounding Barnett has unfortunately reached its breaking point. His upcoming fight with Siala “Mighty Mo” Siliga is almost certainly Barnett’s last chance to reclaim legitimacy in a heavyweight division no longer quite so starved for talent. While there is little doubt that Barnett will beat Siligia, he can’t afford a lackadaisical performance against an opponent he is expected to dominate.

If Barnett looks like the same fighter who labored to stop a shopworn Gilbert Yvel at Affliction “Day of Reckoning,” the fan base he still has will likely abandon all hope of a renaissance for “The Baby-Faced Assassin.” A shame considering that the most mocked heavyweight in MMA was once the prototype for a next generation mixed martial artist.

Kyokushin Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

One of the nouveau striking styles being adopted into MMA has a chance to shine on this card as both Katsunori Kikuno and Andrews Nakahara employ the brutal beauty of Kyokushin with a brilliance rarely seen in the sport. Although Kikuno is facing a stern test in the form of Kuniyoshi Hironaka and Nakahara has to deal with the veteran savvy of Ryo Chonan, both men have a reputation for bringing the violence in spades.

While neither fighter is a hands-down favorite, and justifiably so, there are few fistic experiences as worthwhile as watching a quality Kyokushin fighter snap high kicks that defy the laws of physics. Considering both Hironaka and Chonan have lost a step or 20 in recent years, here’s hoping Kikuno and Nakahara both rock the Brazilian kick so it can take the Superman punch’s place as the technique of the moment.

Let’s not be trite here: MMA is fun to watch because there are few joys as visceral and universal as two fine-tuned athletes recreating the kung-fu movies of our youth. If any of you ever stayed up late to watch a 2 a.m. airing of “Bloodsport,” do yourself a favor and watch Nakahara and Kikuno do their thing big time.

[Dream. 13]: Noons-'Dida' finalizzato (22/03/2010)

Karl James Noons and Andre “Dida” Amado will meet in a lightweight bout at Dream 13 on March 22 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

Noons, who signed with the U.S.-based Strikeforce in December, will represent the promotion as part of a cross-promotional talent alliance. Dream competitors Mitsuhiro Ishida, Melvin Manhoef, and Marius Zaromskis have already competed for the American outlet. Dream lightweight champion Shinya Aoki will make his Strikeforce debut against lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez on April 17 in Nashville, Tenn.


The 26-year-old kickboxer has key MMA victories over former UFC contender Yves Edwards and Nick Diaz, Strikeforce’s 170-pound champion. Noons bested the mouthy Stockton, Calif., native with a second-round TKO on cuts in September 2007. Words between the fighters and their families ensued in the cage, but a rematch has yet to materialize.

Amado, who began his career with the once-revered Chute Boxe Academy before departing the team in 2007, dropped a first-round technical knockout to Katsunori Kikuno at Dream 10 last July. Amado scored a first-round TKO against Caol Uno in K-1 Hero’s lightweight tournament, but was eliminated by winner Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante later that same night.

Dream also announced three additional bouts for its March 22 event. Deep lightweight champion Kikuno will meet UFC veteran Kuniyoshi Hironaka in a second lightweight bout, while Ryo Chonan will face Andrews Nakahara in a welterweight bout. Dream “Super Hulk” champion Ikuhisa Minowa will clash with Jimmy Ambriz in an open-weight bout.

[Dream. 13]: un "Big name" peso massimo sarà presente nella card. Che si tratti di Fedor? O di Arlovski? O qualcun altro? (22/03/2010)

M-1 speaks, Fedor will not fight until May, against Fabricio Werdum.

The much-maligned rumor mill involving Fedor Emelianenko's next fight will continue on until some company decides to step out of the shadows and announce him for their next card. Head Kick Legend did receive confirmation the other day that Emelianenko's camp is in negotiations for an upcoming bout, but suspiciously enough, no promotion was named. Normally, not a big deal, right? He has a contract with Strikeforce, they have a CBS card upcoming and possibly a PPV. Easy. The non-exclusive nature of the contract as well as Fedor and M-1's take has led to questions and speculation. Instead of Strikeforce putting the fire out, they remain silent and Sasahara from DREAM hasn't done anything to help in that matter, either.

At the DREAM presser, he went out of his way telling the press that Andre Dida vs. KJ Noons will be one of two bouts on the DREAM.13 card with a theme of Strikeforce vs. DREAM. The other fight, still unannounced will be a heavyweight showdown, featuring a DREAM heavyweight and a Strikeforce heavyweight. Innocent enough, right? The level of fighter Sasahara mentioned was a "Fedor-level" heavyweight, quoted in some Japanese news sources as "super-heavyweight" (not meaning heavy, like Bob Sapp, but a superstar).

So while there will be something more solid next week, put together the situation with what facts we already have. First of all, Fedor Emelianenko has not been announced for a Strikeforce card yet. K-1 has offered him a giant money contract in the past (if you don't believe me, I have actually seen it), K-1 can put far more money on the table and has a national television deal as long as they can prove a card worthy, as well as big money backers and sponsors. Fighters like Alistair Overeem have been hesitant to leave Japan as the money is just too good to pass up for much less in the United States. So is Fedor a possiblity? Until we hear otherwise, yes.

Speaking of Alistair Overeem, the chances of him being the Strikeforce fighter are very low, as he is the only real DREAM heavyweight of value, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion or not. That means what we are most likely looking at here, is who will fight Alistair Overeem for the vacant DREAM Heavyweight Title (Tanigawa confirmed this earlier in the year, Overeem vs. X for the DREAM Heavyweight belt). Another name that shouldn't be crossed out to fight would be Andrei Arlovski. Arlovski has been working on getting a new contract with Strikeforce together in between his boxing exploits, and was actually handed a contract from FEG to fight Overeem on New Year's Eve before Golden Glory manager Bas Boon refused to sign the fight. Andrei's camp was furious, but the door could very well still be open, as he has been rumored to fight in DREAM early this year.

Another big name heavyweight that is without an upcoming fight is Tim Sylvia. Sylvia has been trying to make his DREAM debut since October now, and his fight next month has fallen apart twice now. Other names to think of are Brett Rogers, who has expressed interest in fighting Overeem and hasn't been booked yet or Antonio Silva.

[Dream / K-1]: After a Lull, K-1 Will Murder Us With Shows in March and April; K-1 Grand Prix in Yokohama Announced

K-1 Dynamite!! 2009 was the last we officially saw of FEG, as I write this we are rounding out February without even the K-1 MAX Japan tournament having unfolded yet (usually this happens in late February). FEG's schedule in Japan for March and April is absolutely breakneck now, as starting on March 22nd, FEG will hold around one show a week for the next three weeks! Two and a half months of inactivity will be followed up with cramming in as many shows as possible into a three week span.

DREAM.13
Things kick off for FEG in Japan on the 22nd with DREAM.13 from the Yokohama Arena, and of course in typical FEG fashion, not much is known about the card other than the DREAM Featherweight Championship being defended, as Bibiano Fernandes takes on the former DREAM Lightweight Champion, Joachim "Hellboy" Hansen. Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Eddie Alvarez, Ryo Chonan, Katsunori Kikuno, Minowaman, Andrews Nakahara, Hideo Tokoro and Marius Zaromskis are all slated to appear, with the rumor being Zaromskis defending the DREAM Welterweight Championship against Kiyoshi Tamura.

World MAX Japan
Next up on the 27th, the K-1 World MAX Japan tournament is set in the Super Saitama Community Arena, and unlike the other shows, this one has a fight card! Tournament brackets are set up and with fighters like Taishin Kohiruimaki, Yuya Yamamoto, Yuichiro Nagashima, Yasuhiro Kido and HINATA. This show also features the rise of the 63kgs division, featuring Takehiro Murahama, Kazuhisa Watanabe and DJ Taiki. The main event of the show will be 2009 World MAX Champion Giorgio Petrosyan against Yoshihiro Sato.

World Grand Prix in Yokohama
K-1 circles back to the Yokohama arena on April 3rd for the K-1 World Grand Prix in Yokohama. No fights have been announced for this show yet, but their first offering in Japan will look to be a strong one, with of course the rumor that Alistair Overeem will fight one more K-1 fight and that this will be the show.

[Dream. 13]: parteciperanno Minowaman, Kikuno e Tokoro - giovedì conferenza stampa (22/03/2010)

FEG president Sadaharu Tanikawa tweeted today that Minowaman (44-30-8), Katsunori Kikuno (12-2-2) and Hideo Tokoro (26-21-1) will participate in the DREAM.13 event on March 22nd from the Yokohama Arena. Tanikawa also said that DREAM will hold a press conference this Thursday the 25th.

DREAM event producer Keiichi Sasahara wrote on his blog today that the DREAM.13 card would be announced this week which I would assume will happen at the aforementioned press conference.

[Dream. 13]: Marius Zaromskis vs Kiyoshi Tamura (22/03/2010)

Prima ancora che il match tra Nick Diaz e Marius Zaromiskis venisse disputato durante lo Strikeforce di questo sabato notte a Miami, è venuta fuori la notizia flash che Zaromiskis difenderà il Dream Welterweight Championship contro la leggenda giapponese Kiyoshi Tamura in marzo, ammesso e non concesso che il match con Diaz si concluda senza infortuni.

Per quanto riguarda Tamura, non si vede sul ring da più di un anno, e l'orgoglioso lottatore Giapponese ha rifiutato più volte di scendere di categoria di peso. Tamura si è trovato diverse volte a combattere contro gente di stazza nettamente superiore alla sua, quando combatteva per i pesi medi del Pride (205lb, 93kg) ed è stato partecipe di grandi battaglie anche con dei pesi massimi, come Hidehiko Yoshida e Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Combattere avversari così più pesanti ha pregiudicato la carriera di Tamura, ha ottenuto solo discreti successi negli ultimi 10 anni dei suoi 15 di attività, a causa del suo orgoglio di voler combattere solo i migliori in categorie di peso superiori. Combattere Zaromiskis nella sua vera categoria di peso è un grosso passo, ma Tamura adesso ha 40 anni, quindi il fattore età, non irrilevante, sarà tutto a favore del 29enne lituano Marius Zaromiskis.

Hayato Sakurai prossimo possibile avversario per Nick Diaz

Strikeforce 22: Miami è ormai negli archivi, e alcune domande hanno trovato risposta quando i lottatori Dream sono entrati nella gabbia di Strikeforce negli Stati Uniti. Melvin Manhoef, lottatore K-1 e Dream, ha fatto la sua seconda comparsa sul suolo statunitense opposto a Robbie Lawler in un match che ha controllato fino al gancio destro di Lawler che ha messo fine all'incontro in maniera prematura.

Marius Zaromiskis, il campione dei pesi welter della Dream ha subito un duro KO contro uno dei migliori e più controversi lottatori al mondo: Nick Diaz. Diaz ha dato una sonora lezione al campione Dream, il quale vinse il DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix durante l'evento Dream. 10 mandando nella stessa sera KO con lo stesso high kick Hayato Sakurai e Jason High, tutto ciò aprirebbe le porte alla Dream per mandare un altro lottatore a cercare di recuperare il titolo appena vinto da Diaz.

Poi c'è il discorso di Jay Hieron, anche lui vittorioso nell'ultimo evento Strikeforce contro Joe "Diesel" Riggs per decisione unanime, che ha riportato vittorie in tutte le promotion in cui è stato negli ultimi anni si sente in diritto di una chance al campione Nick Diaz. Hieron ovviamente ha molto da dire a riguardo, potendo reclamare di essere un fighter da main card, e non da card preliminare, e che Nick Diaz sta cercando di evitarlo. Riggs è stato senza dubbio un duro test (Riggs ha vinto contro Diaz), ma Hieron deve ancora impressionare, ben 3 delle sue ultime 4 vittorie sono arrivate per decisione, in maniera spesso non troppo entusiasmante.

Nick Diaz assieme ai suoi compagni di allenamento Jake Shields e Gilbert Melendez saranno sicuramente corteggiati dal UFC non appena il loro contratto con Strikeforce arriverà al termine, quindi è abbastanza semplice capire che un lottatore come Diaz al momento stia cercando dei match che richiamino molta attenzione e molti soldi. In fin dei conti lottare è il loro lavoro, e perchè andare ad affrontare un match molto duro e poco appetibile per i fan al posto di uno molto più remunerativo e che richiamerebbe più attenzione?

Tutto ciò porta a comprendere il perchè del prossimo possibile combattimento per Nick Diaz, Scott Coker ha affermato che Hayato "Mach" Sakurai sarà probabilmente il prossimo rivale di Diaz.
Questo match, assieme a quello tra Shinya Aoki e Gilbert Melendez, dovrebbero essere i prossimo impegni inter-promozionali tra Dream e Strikeforce.

[Dream. 13]: annunciato il match tra Hansen e Fernandes, presente nella card anche Ryo Chonan

Nel marzo 2008 Joachim Hansen partecipò e vinse il Dream lightweight grand prix. Nel marzo 2010 cercherà di portare a casa anche la cintura dei pesi piuma.

Questo giovedì è stato annunciato formalmente che l'incontro per il titolo dei pesi piuma tra l'attuale campione Bibiano Fernandes e l'ex campione dei pesi leggeri si svolgerà durante il Dream. 13 il 22 marzo alla Yokohama Arena, Giappone. E' stato anche annunciato il debutto nel Dream dell'ex UFC Ryo Chonan.

Dopo quasi 15 mesi fuori dal ring, il trentenne Hansen ha fatto ritorno all'azione in ottobre, dove ha perso la cintura dei pesi leggeri della Dream contro il suo rivale Shiniya Aoki, il combattuto match tra i due ha visto il norvegese soccombere per un armbar a soli 4 secondi dalla fine dell'incontro. Dopo aver combattuto da lightweight per i 10 anni della sua carriera, questa sarà la prima volta che Hansen scenderà di categoria. I pesi piuma della Dream non seguono le "Regole Unificate", il limite di peso è imposto a 63 kg (meno di 139 lb).

Il 29enne Fernandes ha dato una svolta alla sua carriera nel 2009, vincendo il Dream featherweight grand prix, diventando il primo campione della promotion nipponica in questa categoria. Il più volte campione del mondo in BJJ ha ottenuto vittorie su Takafumi Otsuka, Masakazu Imanari e Joe Warren prima di vincere per decisione non unanime la finale contro Hiroyuki Takaya lo scorso ottobre.

Chonan è stato tagliato dall'UFC dopo aver perso per decisione non unanime contro T.J. Grant, durante l'UFC 97, dopo aver ottenuto un record nell'ottagono di 1 vittoria e 3 sconfitte. L'ex campione dei pesi medi del Deep ha fatto ritorno nella sua madrepatria ad agosto, dominando e vincendo per decisione unanime un match contro un altro campione Deep Jutaro Nakao.
La prossima settimana si dovrebbero avere informazioni più precise riguardo l'avversario di Chonan.

Sul Blog di Megathai con HDNet

Questa notte, 30 gennaio 2010, sul Blog di Megathai ci sintonizzeremo con il network statunitense HDNet a partire dalle 2:00, per gustarci assieme 3 show televisivi dedicati al mondo del combattimento: K-1 Classics, Inside MMA ed il Best of DEAM Super Hulk Tournament.

Il "K-1 Classics", alle 2:00, presenterà alcuni dei match storici del passato legati a questo stile di combattimento, selezionando quelli più spettacolari che hanno segnato la storia di questo sport.

Alle 3:00 inizierà "Inside MMA", che ci porterà dentro il mondo delle MMA, con interviste esclusive e tante succose novità, in particolare in questo show si parlerà di Gegard Mousasi e del suo prossimo avversario che lui ritiene possa essere King Mo, si discuterà anche del probabile match tra Dan Henderson e Jake Shields. Appariranno come ospiti Mousasi, Gilbert Melendez e Tony Lopez nell'appuntamento di questa settimana. Mousasi parlerà anche del suo allenamento con GSP e quali sono le reali possibilità di vederlo combattere in UFC. Melendez brevemente darà alcune anticipazioni sul suo possibile futuro avversario, nominando KJ Noons e Roger Huerta.

Entering his Dec. 31 bout with UFC veteran Michihiro Omigawa (8-8-1), one could have expected former WEC fighter Hiroyuki Takaya (12-7-1) to have the edge standing.

Takaya, after all, had posted nine knockouts in his 12 career wins while Omigawa had just four among his eight total victories.

In fact, their “Dynamite!! 2009” featherweight fight remained standing and didn’t go to the mat. But as we see in the enclosed video, it wasn’t Takaya who had the edge in the striking department.

I dirigenti giapponesi stanno lavorando per organizzare un terzo incontro tra il carismatico Jason Miller e il fenomeno del jiu jitsu Ronaldo Jacare al Dream 11 presso il Saitama Super Arena a Saitama, Giappone, non è ancora stata fissata alcuna data.

Il match tra i due campioni ha in palio per il vincitore la cintura dei pesi medi del Dream, infatti Gegard Mousasi legittimo detentore ha deciso di renderla vacante per passare alla categoria dei massimi leggeri, Mayhem e Jacare se venisse confermata la sfida si affronteranno per la terza volta, nel primo confronto, che si è svolto al Dream 4, ha avuto la meglio il brasiliano ai punti per decisione unanime, mentre nella seconda occasione il combattimento è stato interrotto e dichiarato il no contest dopo pochi minuti dall’inizio del primo round per un calcio al volto irregolare portato dall’americano mentre Jacare era a terra.
