[UFC 113]: Machida vs Shogun 2 - 8 Questions for Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua (08/05/2010)

It was the most bitter of defeats.

Nearly seven months later, 2005 Pride Fighting Championships welterweight grand prix winner Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will get a second crack at light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in the UFC 113 “Machida vs. Shogun 2” main event on May 8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The 28-year-old Rua discussed his preparation for the hyped rematch, the controversial decision that resulted from his first encounter with Machida and the fast rise of light heavyweight contender Jon Jones in a recent interview with Sherdog.com.

Sherdog.com: With roughly a month left until your rematch with Lyoto Machida, how has training gone?
Shogun: I’m doing my best. The training is good. I’m very focused, and everything is going alright. I have many good fighters training here -- Glaube Feitosa, my brother, [Joao Paulo] “Tuba” [de Souza], Andre “Dida” [Amado]. We have good people and a solid structure. Everything is great.

Sherdog.com: Glaube Feitosa, one of Brazil's K-1 legends, is training with you. How did you get him into your gym?
Shogun: I have a friend who is a friend of Glaube’s, and one day while I was talking to him, I told him that I had watched his fights and was a fan of the guy. Then, coincidentally, he moved to Curitiba with his family. I had said a month earlier that I thought he was very good in muay Thai, and just after that, he came to live here. He is very humble, a very nice person and it seems like we’ve known each other for years.

Sherdog.com: Like Machida, he’s based in karate, but are their styles the same?
Shogun: No. If you watch Glaube and Machida fight, you will see that they have totally different styles; it’s another game. But guys like Glaube, Tuba and Jaoa Raphael “Simpson” are at a level of technical evolution where they are shaped according to the opponent. Joao Guilherme, too; he came from karate and can shape himself according to the Lyoto’s game. As I said in another interview, I hired seven karatekas for the first fight but only stayed with the Joao Guilherme. The people who train with me who can imitate Lyoto’s game are Tuba, Dida and João Guilherme, and they’re here at the academy. We know Lyoto’s game. We saw many of his fights, and they do exactly what he does.

Sherdog.com: You didn’t like the decision in your first fight with Lyoto. At several subsequent UFCs, controversies arose after what many perceived as judging errors. What do you think about that?
Shogun: That happened in my fight, but I see it as part of the past. I don’t think about it. I just think about doing my work and getting ready in there. I just think on May 8 that I have to come well-prepared, without thinking about whether the judges will favor him or me. Hopefully, if I win this fight and it goes to the judges, the judging will be much better.

Sherdog.com: What do you expect Machida to do differently in this next fight?
Shogun: Lyoto is a very eclectic guy who can change his game, but I’ll be prepared for all situations. Actually, I don’t care what he does, only about what I do. I like to train hard, so I worry about being prepared.

Sherdog.com: Jon Jones, who fights in your division, has impressed a lot of people in recent fights. What do you think of his game?
Shogun: He is a great young fighter, too damn good, and he’s coming with everything in our division. He is very good in wrestling. I think he and Cain Velasquez are the two guys with the best wrestling in MMA today, together with Georges St. Pierre. He’s a very good wrestler, very dangerous. He’s a guy who will give a lot of people trouble.

Sherdog.com: What’s next for your brother, Murilo “Ninja” Rua?
Shogun: Murilo is committed to Shine Fights on May 15. He will fight a week after me, so we’ll all be together. The gym has all its fights in May, so the workouts are good. We have a good crowd, all scheduled for fights. That’s good for everybody. God willing, Murilo will represent our country very well and our academy there in Shine.

Sherdog.com: What can fans expect from you in this next fight?
Shogun: You guys can be sure I’m ready. I’ve given everything in me to the training I do. You can expect that I will give my best to represent my country and my gym and to come back with this belt, which is a big dream. I want to thank the people who root for me. My fans are my greatest motivation.

Considerando il background da greco-romanista, la sua esperienza, il suo curriculum, la sua vittoria in un combattimento simile contro Torquino diamo Dan Henderson come favorito, l'unica incognita sarebbe il fiato dell'ormai non più ventenne atleta, che nei round 4 e 5 potrebbe fare a la differenza a favore di Shields. Detto questo il nostro pronostico è per Dan Henderson, con livello di rischio BASSO

* Light Heavyweight Championship bout: Gegard Mousasi (c) vs. Muhammed Lawal - Mousasi ha molta più esperienza e talento, anche se lo score di Lawal con 6 vittorie di cui 5 per (T)KO fa paura ed il rischio che vinca per KO è presente, poi essendo un fortissimo wrestler potrebbe mettere in difficoltà uno che non ha mai affrontato un wrestler di quel calibro. Il nostro pronostico è per Gegard Mousasi, con livello di rischio ALTO

* Lightweight Championship bout: Gilbert Melendez (c) vs. Shinya Aoki: per questo combattimento c'è da considerare che si combatte in una gabbia, negli USA, senza le sostanze dopanti concesse in Giappone, regole Strikeforce, e tutte queste cose sono nuove per Aoki e credo che questo metta Melendez come favorito. Anche da prendere in considerazione è il fatto che Melendez è un atleta molto più completo rispetto al Giapponese, striking potente e una nera di BJJ sotto Gracie. Certo che Aoki possiede uno dei migliori ground game applicato alle MMA che è sempre pericoloso e le possibilità di submission ci sono, oltre al vantaggio di avere un maggiore allungo che potrebbe risultare utile nelle fasi di stand up. Il nostro pronostico è per Gilbert Melendez, con livello di rischio NORMALE

Un bestione che sfila per Versace e si diverte a fare a pugni nel giardino di Hugh Hefner, il signor Playboy, contro un ragazzo cresciuto in chiesa, chierichetto per vocazione e boxeur per missione. E nei sogni non succede nulla, David li sfotte e basta. Li demolisce prima di salire sul quadrato. In patria lo adorano, si allena in riva al Tamigi, è diventato famoso prima ancora di iniziare, con un servizio pubblicitario per Abercrombie & Fitch in cui tanto per cambiare giocava a fare il bullo e adesso punta la recente reputazione sopra un incontro con il suo opposto. [MMA]: Penn’s Memoirs Explain ‘Why I Fight’

B.J. Penn joins a short list of MMA luminaries that includes Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz with the release of his memoirs, “Why I Fight: The Belt Is Just An Accessory,” this week through William Morrow, an imprint of Harper Collins.

The 320-page was co-written with freelance writer and former radio talk show personality David Weintraub, who experienced key moments of Penn’s career as a behind-the-scenes producer for Exit 9 films, which handles the bonus footage for UFC DVDs.

Often referred to as the greatest lightweight ever to grace the sport, Penn is a regular pound-for-pound candidate on ranking lists. Penn’s career has had its milestones, from getting his first crack at championship title in only his fourth pro bout to his contractual woes with the UFC following Penn’s decision to fight in Japan’s K-1 promotion to his UFC return and domination of the 155-pound ranks in 2007.

Sherdog.com caught up with Penn, who’s in New York City for the first leg of his book tour, to discuss why this pen(ning) is mightier than the sword.

Sherdog.com: How long did you work on “Why I Fight?”

Penn: We started working on the book around the UFC “Primetime” show with (Georges) St. Pierre (in December 2008) and we finished right before the Diego Sanchez fight (in December 2009.)

Sherdog.com: At 31 years old, did you feel you were old enough to write your autobiography?

Penn: I think that this is only one part of my career and I have a lot to talk about in this part of my career. I think I still have some left that might turn into another book starting from now. But some people suggested to me that maybe I should write a book and I thought it was a good time. With a lot of the fighters coming up, people out there only get to see the fighter step in the Octagon. Here’s a story from someone who’s stepped in the Octagon many times, someone who has and hasn’t been a champion, who did the whole thing of fighting over in Japan, which was big at one time, and seeing what you were worth as a free agent. The fighters who are in the sport now don’t really have that option that some of us did back then.

Sherdog.com: What was your favorite part of the book-writing process?

Penn: Finishing it, probably. (Laughs) Because we were just so busy. We had so many fights coming up, I was just happy to finish it.

Sherdog.com: And your least favorite part?

Penn: Talking to David Weintraub every day. I mean, who would want to do that? (Laughs)

Sherdog.com: Is there anything in the book that you’re nervous about revealing, and if so, why?

Penn: No, no. Everything in the book, I said it. A lot of it is old history and it may not relate to everything that’s going on today, but I didn’t try to lie or make up anything.

Sherdog.com: Is there any surprising elements in the book? What will fans take away about you that they didn’t know before?

Penn: I don’t think there’s anything very surprising. I think it’s just a story about a kid who grew up in Hawaii who ended up becoming a mixed martial arts world champion and his trials and tribulations through his life and career. People can use that to follow their own career in MMA or their career in life, period. Different people go through different things -- it’s one foot in front of the other and people move forward.

Sherdog.com: What is the message of your book?

Penn: Everybody wants to say who I am: if I’m just some lazy, rich kid who does nothing. A lot of people like to write about that and express who I am. Here’s my shot where I can let everybody know. I was excited about the book in the sense, where I can say , ‘Look, this is who I am. This is me and this is the mixed martial arts industry,’ because it’s one of the most misunderstood sports industries out there today.

2000 km:è la distanza percorsa dagli altleti Rainbow Team Andrea Sighinolfi e Paolo Manzoni per arrivare agli Assoluti Kombat League svolti il 28-03-10 a Porto Potenza Picena (AN).
Un'avventura iniziata ad inizio Ottobre a Viterbo , con la prima tappa per la qualificazione , e conclusa 5 mesi dopo con le finali nelle Marche , passando per le altre fasi qualificanti a Verona,Roma e Milano.
Causa un infortunio l'atleta Paolo Manzoni non ha potuto partecipare all'ultimo atto , così l'unico rappresentante R.T rimane Andrea Sighinolfi qualificato nella Kick L e nel K1 L categoria -85 Kg , accompagnato dal secondo Francesco Galass

La giornata di gare si è conclusa con una doppia vittoria per l'atleta bolognese che si impone sia nel k1 , disputando 2 incontri (semifinale e finale) e nella Kick (vittoria per abbandono dell'avversario prima del match).
La Muay Thai L categoria -85kg , invece , ha visto primeggiare l'atleta Marco Zedda del Team Procopio Varese.

è stato una giornata intera all'insegna degli sport da ring con grande risposta di atleti e pubblico...del resto come tutte le manifestazioni Kombat League.

Tony Lauri, caccia al titolo italiano

È ormai in dirittura d'arrivo il grande appuntamento pugilistico che vedrà protagonista Tony Lauri: il pugile di Venegono tornerà infatti a combattere per il titolo italiano dei pesi welter, affrontando il campione uscente Giuseppe Langella il prossimo venerdì 23 aprile.


Teatro del combattimento di "The Ruler" sarà il nuovo palasport di Malnate che aprirà i battenti alla boxe dopo aver già ospitato appuntamenti di rilievo compresa un'amichevole precampionato tra Cimberio e Montegranaro. La riunione era originariamente in programma venerdì 16 ma è stato spostato di una settimana per esigenze televisive.
La serata inzierà alle 20 ed è organizzata dai "Panthers" in collaborazione con la Opi 2000; in programma come di consueto anche altri incontri che impegneranno i pugili del club varesino del maestro Augusto Lauri; tra questi spicca l'esordio da professionista di Alessandro Giardino.

A Di Luisa il titolo italiano

Per Di Luisa, militare di professione di stanza proprio a Viterbo, c'era anche il tifo di una nutritissima rappresentanza di membri dell'esercito delle varie caserme della Città dei Papi. Per lui e per il padre Michele, che lo segue all'angolo, era una serata importante anche per la notizia giunta da Helsinki che diceva di come Diego Di Luisa, campione italiano dei dilettanti e grande speranza della boxe italiana, fratello del primo e figlio minore del secondo, aveva superato di slancio un pugile finlandese ed era così approdato alla semifinale del torneo della capitale scandinava di domani.


Arbitro del match il signor Antonio Giubelli, giudici i signori Panichi, Marzuoli e Randaccio, commissario di riunione il signor Rolando Barrovecchio, osservatore arbitrale il signor Quartarone, medico il professor Mario Ireneo Sturla, regia di Rai Sport Più di Giancarlo Tomassetti e commento affidato a Mario Mattioli e Nino Benvenuti. Dopo l'inno di Mameli cantato da Debora Tundo con la solita voce incantevole, ecco che era ora di dare la parola al ring.

Dopo una leggera schermaglia Di Luisa, improvvisamente, faceva partire un micidiale destro che trovava Cocco con la guardia aperta. Il torinese andava in difficoltà, Di Luisa trovava ancora lo spiraglio giusto e Cocco era al tappeto. Si rialzava ma in evidente stato confusionale e bene faceva l'arbitro Giubelli a decretare il ko tecnico dopo la miseria di quarantuno secondi della prima ripresa. Per Di Luisa c'era il titolo italiano e l'ottava vittoria da professionista prima del limite. Per il ragazzo viterbese, non a caso indicato come il maggior talento emergente del nostro professionismo, un'ulteriore conferma della forza e della pericolosità dei suoi colpi. Cocco è pugile esperto ma si è dovuto inchinare anche lui alla precisione chirurgica di quello che si annuncia essere uno dei colpi più belli di questo 2010.
